บาคาร่าเล่นด้วยไพ่ 8 สำรับรวมกัน มีการแจกไพ่ 2 มือคือมือของผู้เล่น (Player) และมือของเจ้ามือ (Banker)

ก่อนแจกไพ่ ผู้เล่นต้องวางเดิมพันว่าจะเลือกมือของผู้เล่นหรือเจ้ามือที่จะชนะ หรือจะเลือกเดิมพันเสมอ (Tie)

แจกไพ่ออกมา 2 ใบให้มือผู้เล่นและ 2 ใบให้มือเจ้ามือ มูลค่าของไพ่จะอยู่ระหว่าง 0-9 โดยที่ไพ่รูปและไพ่ 10 จะนับเป็น 0 คะแนน

จุดมุ่งหมายคือการได้แต้มใกล้เคียง 9 คะแนนมากที่สุด หากมือใดมีแต้มรวมเกิน 9 ก็จะหักลบด้วย 10

ถ้าหากมือผู้เล่นหรือมือเจ้ามือได้แต้มรวม 8 หรือ 9 ก็จะจบเกมทันที ไม่มีการจ่ายไพ่ใบถัดไป
